WINDING DOWN
Winding Down is a night-time ballad to soothe and calm wound up children and distracted parents. A rhythmic meditation to read before bed or after kinder/school playtime to re-focus attention and become present. Winding Down also makes a perfect present for an expecting Mum or new baby.
One of the most important parts of the night-time story-time routine is really being present, and not having the day of work, the piled-up housework, the bills to pay & daily stresses sitting with you in that extremely important connective time between parent and child.
Author Penny O' Loughlin wrote this book so that the words as read -remind the parent/reader to calm themselves and reflect on their own day and in that same process have a flow on effect of calming energy to their children.

I am the mother of two young and very busy boys.
They are bright, passionate balls of energy that bring me so much joy. But motherhood can be overwhelming at times, especially at the end of the day.
I wrote this book to assist with the often chaotic night-time /bed-time, winding down routine and have found that it has helped me to create a shared & connected calming energy with my boys. The words as read remind the parent to be a calm anchor amidst the surrounding tempest.
My background is in Architecture and Landscape Architecture where I studied my degree at Melbourne University from 2000- 2007. I worked at an event landscaping company for over 14years and have had my own Landscape Design company since.
The 2020 Pandemic & Melbourne’s subsequent 6months of hard lockdown afforded me some serious time to dedicate to my children and to my passion of becoming a children’s book author.
After sifting through the library for the books that would assist & guide me in my night-time/ calm down routine, I turned to children’s audio meditations and audio sleep time books. I also looked into physical therapies and breathwork.
And thus, I decided to write my own bedtime wind-down/calming ballad – combining the practices of observing your own thoughts, detaching from the mind & breathwork to assist in concentrated muscle relaxation & steadying of the heartrate.
The rhyming verse with its steady heartbeat rhythm works as a night-time meditation that can be shared by both parents/readers and their child/children. It can be read and re-read simultaneously if required.
In an age where mindfulness is becoming essential to finding peace and contentment in our daily life and its management, especially in this fast-paced world, I hope that ‘Winding down,’ can be beneficial to you in creating an enjoyable night-time routine with your child/children.
Throughout 2022 I read it at numerous kindergartens, childcare centers and ELC's, who now use it as a helpful guidance tool for foundation years where re-focusing, letting go & becoming present is so important for learning and development.
This coming Feb 2025 my next book 'Bud and Buzz,' will be available. It is an educational and engaging book about the interconnectedness between plants and animals. It is about a relationship between a young flower 'Bud,' and a bee 'Buzz.'
